June 1993 Mirjam graduated with distinction in Human Nutrition at the Wageningen Agricultural University, orientation Nutrition and Health. After completion of her studies she worked as areamanager for Janssen-Cilag (Johnson & Johnson group company), division Gastro-enterology till 1997. She was responsible for sales management for various medicins, organizing seminars and refreshment courses for doctors. July 1997, she moved to Switzerland and acted as a research project manager at Covance Central Laboratory Services in Geneva.

After giving birth to two children in Switzerland, she returned to the Netherlands at the end of 2000. Early 2002, her son Ralph was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Shortly thereafter she engaged in voluntary work for Duchenne Parent Project in the Netherlands. Activities consist of contacting parents, coordinating fundraising activities, administering memberships, organizing the annual Duchenne conference, publishing newsletters and maintaining website and social media.

Since 2006, Mirjam is a member of the Board of Duchenne Parent Project in the Netherlands.
